Lux & Ivy’s Favorites

June 1, 2025   |   by oemb1905

First of all, massive thanks to Kogar the Swinging Ape and his work on developing these compilations, authentically tying them to lore about The Cramps, Lux Interior, Poison Ivy, and then creating associated artwork, re-mastering them in some cases, making treasure hunts out of them (see Vol. 17), and just putting tireless work into music archival. Hat’s off and thank you. I strongly recommend that people subscribe to his RSS feed and/or bookmark his blog. Additionally, he has a profile at Mixcloud you should follow and interact with and he does regular shows for Boss Radio 66.

Kogar has put a lot of work into making his downloads easier to find, etc., but there’s still historical mistakes in the downloads and/or other missing tags/metadata. He remastered a bunch of his releases, but he did that over 10+ years and not in order. Out of frustration with bootleggers of his compilations, he released Vol. 17 as a scavenger hunt. In the old days (very late 90s, early 00s), most of us used Napster, then Limewire, and then torrents to obtain the files, usually stumbling upon them while looking for music from The Cramps. As the early to mid 00s progressed, and more releases were made and/or you wanted to perfect your collection, WFMU Blog posts like this one “blog post example” and/or others with direct downloads emerged, often including track listings and other discussion about the compilations. There’s also a Reddit Post here (and others) that were helpful as the series progressed. Kogar eventually migrated to Blogspot, making new releases much easier to obtain. After taking a break from 2014 to 2021, Kogar resumed actively working on the project, releasing more volumes and a best of series. These issues and the long history of scattered posts (see below) make curating his project a worthwhile task. For that reason, I’ve provided my curated downloads and streaming playlists below. These downloads and playlists contain the missing metadata for Volume 17 (including the tracks not identified on MusicBrainz as of this post), corrections for miscellaneous tagging errors, corrections for uncommon file types, corrections for mis-labeled track files, etc., and all of the MusicBrainz tags and associated metadata (used Picard for editing the files). You can listen to the playlists using the following credentials:

Please note that this collection is so loved that people shamelessly pass these collections off as their own, develop their own blog posts about them, make their own alternate artwork, and even go so far as to invalidly credit themselves for their publication. These bootleggers not only disrespect Kogar, but they add their own tagging mistakes and just generally contribute to the milieu of misinformation and difficulties in obtaining the current masters and associated artwork. Please don’t contribute to any of that! Instead, let’s help Kogar’s compilations shine by contributing to his compilations on MusicBrainz.

The album downloads above are on my company’s Nextcloud instance and the listening links are from the public Navidrome instance I run for the PubGLUG. Don’t hesitate to email me or DM me on Matrix if you catch any other errors or insights, whether they be tagging or attribution mistakes, missing/extra artwork, improved masters, corrections, or what have you. Thanks and enjoy!

To Do List

  • 11-22-25: Music Brainz has a different track listing for Volume 3 with an additional track (Buzzsaw Twist, The Gee Cees) at the end that’s not found on the original Vol. 3 from Kogar and/or the re-master that I retain. I’ve reached out to Kogar and he’s replied that he will investigate and get back to me.
Update: He’s got back to me. It should be #31 … he’s gonna fix things but it will take time.
  • 11-23-25: While reviewing his blog, I saw that he made a Christmas mix out of Lux’s old christmas mix-tapes, so I will eventually bring those into my collection, add MB tags, etc., and make a separate post
  • 11-23-25: I noticed he purchased a bootleg Cramps album (post below), so I will find and purchase that album too and add it to the collection with MB tags, and/or any needed improvements
  • 11-23-25: Need to add the Favorites Special to “All Listen” and Downloads
